Tandler - Tarik

By Tarik El-Bashir and Rich Tandler

Over the next few weeks, Insiders Tarik El-Bashir and Rich Tandler will take a position-by-position look at the Redskins’ depth chart.

Some battles are straightforward. Others could get complicated. This much, however, cannot be debated: A player is not on the 53-man roster until its finalized Aug 31.

So who’s in? And who’s in jeopardy? Up today …

Position: Fullback

On the roster: Darrel Young, Eric Kettani

Likely to make the 53: Young

Comment: The Redskins converted Young from a linebacker to a fullback a few years ago and he caught on quickly. He is one of those players who makes his living the in NFL by being tough and smart. Because of this Young is a favorite of Mike Shanahan’s.

Young played just 357 snaps on offense (about 32 percent of the Redskins’ total plays) and in the vast majority of those snaps (231) he was called upon to block during a running play. But he also got his hands on the ball from time to time, usually on a quick hitter on third or fourth and short. Young wasn’t a major factor in the passing game but he did average 13.6 yards on his eight receptions.

Despite the fact that the offense doesn’t rely on the fullback position much don’t look for the Redskins to follow the recent trend of going without a fullback on the roster. They like Young too much as a football player and they will find ways to use him.

Battling for a job: Kettani

Comment: Kettani was one of the feel good stories of the offseason as the Naval Reserve officer got promoted to Lieutenant in a ceremony at Redskins Park. However, the prospects of him getting promoted from the practice squad, where he spent last year, to the 53-man roster seem slim. Young is entrenched as the starting fullback and there isn’t room on the roster for two players in a position that the Redskins utilize on just about a third of their snaps.
