Earlier this week we pointed out that Jim Haslett spoke of his defensive plans for 2013 as though he was certain that linebacker Brian Orakpo would be a part of the team. Orakpo is slated to become a free agent on March 11. We speculated that this could mean that Haslett knew that if the Redskins and Orakpo did not agree on a deal he would be designated the team’s franchise player. That is the only way to ensure that Orakpo will be around.
It appears that the same message that went to Haslett has gone to the ticket sales department.
When you go to sign up for the season ticket waiting list on Redskins.com, you come to this page. Just above the form to fill out to get on the list it says, “Sign up for the Season Ticket Wait List and be entered to win an autographed Brian Orakpo Jersey!”
That certainly would be an odd incentive to advertise if they didn’t know for sure that Orakpo will be around for the 2014 season. I mean, it would be kind of awkward if they had to FedEx it to, say, Jacksonville to get him to autograph it.
Bruce Allen has not said anything about the possibility of tagging Orakpo one way or the other and the deed won’t be done until the team officially notifies the league office. But evidence is mounting that they intend to pull the trigger on the tag if they have to do it to ensue Orakpo’s presence in Washington in 2014.
