March is coming in like a Lion!

There were a couple of days to get out on the water last week, and fish were caught.

Days are getting longer. Water temperatures are still below 40 degrees. NBC Ch. 4 meteorologist "Weather Kim" Martucci says “Looks like snow for Monday with cold temperatures for the week! Highs only in the low 30s and overnight lows in the upper teens! Warming for the weekend into the upper 40s along with a chance of rain.”

Punisher Hair jigs are tops this time of the year as craft hair fibers breathe under water, adding life to a stationary bait. Using a 1/4-ounce jig, with a smaller soft plastic chunk allows baits to fall. Heavier 3/8 ounce jigs are needed in the wind or if using heavier line. In this case, adding a larger chunk will slow the fall.

Punisher rattles help fish find the jigs. Gel type attractants clog the hair. Jack's Juice Bait Spray encourages fish to hold on longer.

Silver Buddy blade baits are still a good choice. In low light or stained water try 1/2 ounce gold baits. Otherwise silver types are good. Slowly burp or drag the bait off the bottom. Try GAMMA Copoly 10-pound test line on casting gear. Lighter reels like the Quantum EXO on a lighter action medium heavy rod are easier to use.

Grubs like 4-inch Mizmo curl tail...chartreuse in shallow or clear water, darker colors in stained water or on cloudy days. Use a ¼-ounce ball head jig.

Fish are grouped up at warm water discharges like Blue Plains and Four Mile Run. Using 8-pound test GAMMA Copoly tie on a Lucky Craft Pointer 78. Aurora Gold and Baby Bass colors are good, more natural with very clear water. Make long casts.
