Fishing on the Potomac
Congratulations to MercuryTopwater Clothing Pro John Hutchins for winning the Everstart Tournament last week! This week fishing will be much better as water temperatures are cooling! Last week water was in the mid 80s. This week temperatures will fall to the upper 70s.
With a lot of sun, fish might be holding tighter to cover and a bit deeper! NBC Ch. 4 meteorologist "Weather Kim" Martucci says, A much cooler week with highs early in the week in the upper 70s and then warming to the low 80s by the weekend. Overnight lows in the upper 50s to around 60 by the weekend...light winds and sunshine all week!
The better tides for topwater bites will come earlier in the week with
low tides coming later in the morning and into the early afternoon by the end of the week. Buzzbaits and Walkers like Lucky Craft Gunfish. Poppers like Lucky Craft G-Splash will also work. Try light colors in clear water and darker bigger sizes in stained or choppy water.
After that, use moving baits early. Chatter jigs with green pumpkin skirts and green pumpkin Manns HardNose Flippin Craws as a trailer. Vary speeds to see what works. Manns Baby 1-Minus will work too! Here color will be important. In clear water, try some of the shad patterns. But crawfish patterns have been working very well in all water clarity.
As the tide falls and the sun comes up, fish edges of grass, deeper parts of docks and shoreline cover. As the sun gets high in the sky, bass will move to deeper edges. Chatter jigs and Manns Baby 1-Minus will still work, but when things get slow, go to Texas Rigged Mizmo tubes and stickworms.
