Two early goals were all D.C. United needed as the Black-and-Red escaped their trip north of the border with a 3-0 win over Toronto FC. Chris Pontius tallied in the 5th minute and Charlie Davies added another five minutes later as United earned a valuable three points away from RFK.

"We got two goals in first half, we haven't scored in the first half yet, it changes the game," said Pontius in a televised post-game interview. "We sat back a lot after that, but the goals allowed us to. We tried to stay compact, keep them in front us, we were going for the shutout tonight."

Pontius, who leads United in shots but had yet to score this season, opened the scoring early with a great individual play. After pouncing on a loose ball, Pontius went straight at the Toronto defense, settling the ball onto his left foot before slamming it past Toronto goalie Stefan Frei.

It didn't take long for United to add to their tally, as Toronto let another loose ball fall to the wrong player. This time it was Charlie Davies, who clipped a perfect pass to a wide-open Josh Wolff. Wolff's shot drew a good save from Frei, but Davies was there for the rebound to make it 2-0. The goal was Davies' fifth of the season, good enough for top scoring honors in MLS.

United ensured the victory in the 73rd minute, when Pontius struck for his second goal of the match. WIth Toronto pushed forward in search of a goal, Fred led an efficient D.C. counter that ended with Pontius' right-footed finish past Frei.

"We break out on the counter, Fred plays me a good ball," said Pontius. " I faked it to my left, went to my right, it's kind of my signature move and I just put it in the far post."

The win improves United's record to 2-2-1 on the season. D.C. returns to play Thursday evening with a home match against the New York Red Bulls.
