UPDATED: 5:23 p.m.
Rex Grossman couldnt prevent the Redskins losing streak from reaching five games, but he did enough against Miami to get the start at quarterback this week against Dallas.
At least as of 3 p.m. Monday, Grossman is the starter. Who knows if Grossman will keep his position until 1 p.m. Sunday?
Rex is going to be our quarterback, coach Mike Shanahan said at Redskins Park. When you go with a veteran quarterback, its pretty easy to decide, because the situation pretty much stays status quo.
Unless theres an injury during the week, Rex will be the quarterback, but crazier things have happened. Rex could go down and John Beck would have to come in.
Crazier things did happen last week when Shanahan publicly endorsed Beck despite losing all three of his starts. But during practice, the quarterbacks split first-team snaps and on Saturday, Shanahan informed the team of the move.
In the 20-9 loss to the Dolphins, Grossman was 21-of-32 for 215 yards and two interceptions, the last one being a crippling turnover early in the fourth quarter from the Miami 10-yard line.
I was impressed with the way he played, the way he handled himself, Shanahan said. Everybody says, Well, you had nine points. Well, nine points goes to the collective group.
The collective group is ranked 28th in scoring (15.1 points per game), ahead of only Cleveland, Indianapolis, Jacksonville and St. Louis. The Redskins have four offensive touchdowns during the five-game losing streak.
Shifting back to Grossman didnt improve the offensive output (down from the 11 points against San Francisco). But even the smallest hint of life from the passing game five passes of at least 18 yards compared with zero in the 49ers loss was enough of a reason to give Grossman his seventh start of the year.
I felt fine, he said after the game. We moved the ball pretty well, but we didnt get in the end zone. I thought our offensive line played well, and we just didnt get it done. Its frustrating, because I think we should have.
Grossman was asked after the game whether it matters if he is alerted of his status on Monday or Saturday of each game week.
I dont know, he said. The only thing I can control is how I prepare and get ready to play.
Shanahan naturally disagreed his waffling on the quarterback has had a negative locker room impact.
Usually you have a feel of the locker room, the pulse of the locker room, even though sometimes it probably appears to you guys that I dont, he said. We usually have a good feel on how the players react and how they feel.
To that point, Shanahan said he was pleased with how Grossman responded to his Week 5 benching.
Anybody who gets demoted, if its secondary, linebacker, offensive line, its always tough, Shanahan said. This is a very competitive group and you understand you have highs and lows and you just have to compete, go out and practice well, wipe it out and do what you think you need to do get better as a player.
Rex did a great job of doing his job on the scout team and the few reps he got with the first unit. As a leader, you cant be down too much.
Monday was all about Shanahan praising Grossman and expressing confidence. But if Shanahan has proved anything during his 25-game stretch with the Redskins, its that any change can be imminent. Remember, there are seven long weeks left in the season, and the Redskins are on the cusp of their first six-game losing streak in 13 years.
Its not just one guy that runs an offense; its 11 guys working together, he said. What Im trying to do is get the best chemistry and do the best thing for our offensive football team.
