Alex Ovechkin skated for about 15 minutes but did not push hard prior to todays 11:30 a.m. practice at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.
Ovechkin skated lightly by himself in a powder blue non-contact jersey and left the ice before his teammates began practice. He briefly attempted a few stops and starts but quickly gave up, an indication he is not yet ready to participate in a full practice."He's day-to-day right now," Capitals coach Dale Hunter said. "He tried it. He's going to rest (Thursday) again and see what it's like (Friday)."
Ovechkin appeared to suffer the injury with about 12 minutes remaining in the second period of the Capitals 5-0 loss in Carolina on Monday night when he was hit hard along the boards with a Bryan Allen hip check.
Ovechkins left hip took the brunt of the hit and he may have suffered a groin injury on the play.
Ovechkin was not made available to the media after his skate and is questionable for Friday nights game against the Montreal Canadiens at the Verizon Center. He sat out Wednesday nights 5-2 loss in Ottawa.
With Ovechkin sidelined, Hunter kept intact his top line of Mike Knuble, Brooks Laich and Troy Brouwer, which went without a goal in Wednesday nights loss.
Hunters other lines had Mathieu Perreault between Jason Chimera and Alex Semin; Marcus Johansson between Matt Hendricks and Keith Aucoin; and Jeff Halpern between Jay Beagle and Joel Ward.
