Sudden thoughts and second thoughts as the Capitals spend today in Pittsburgh preparing for Sundays 12:30 p.m. puck drop against the surging Penguins:

--Goaltender Michal Neuvirth has not faced the Penguins this season but with Tomas Vokoun 0-2 in his last two starts, Neuvirth could get the call in Pittsburgh. He is coming off a 3-0 shutout victory in Montreal and is 2-0-1 against the Pens in his career.

Tomas Vokoun is 2-1-0 against the Pens this season, including a 1-0 shutout victory on Jan. 11. Vokoun has allowed just four goals in his three games against the Pens this season and owns a career mark of 9-10-2-4 against them.

--The Caps managed just 23 shots on goal in their 3-0 loss in Carolina Friday night and have been outshot in 12 of their last 13 games. They fell to 13-14-2 when getting outshot this season.

We obviously didn't play well, said Capitals defenseman Dennis Wideman. We didnt seem to have any jump. We turned a lot of pucks over and we played a lot of time in our own zone.

--The Capitals special teams had a rough night in Raleigh, allowing two power-play goals and a shorthanded tally. The Caps went 0-for-3 on the man-advantage, while the Canes went 2-for-3.

We had our chances again, but you can tell by the stats that special teams killed us, coach Dale Hunter said. They scored two power-play goals and they scored shorthanded. Our power play, we gave up five or six scoring chances. We made bad decisions with the puck and it cost us.
