UPDATED 3:52 p.m.
Back for only one game after a setback with his season-long Achilles tendon injury, Redskins safety LaRon Landry has been ruled out for Sundays match up against the New York Jets because of a groin problem.
Landry, who will miss his fourth game of the year, went down in the first half last week against Seattle and was limited to 47 of 66 snaps although he did finish the game.
After practice Friday, but before coach Mike Shanahan announced him as out, Landry said he felt snake-bitten, about the injuries that have plagued his contract year. He is a free agent in March.
One injury after another, Landry said. But Im always going to persevere and do whatever I can do.
Landry was out the entire preseason and the first two regular season games with Achilles and hamstring injuries and missed the Dallas game two weeks ago when the Achilles flared up again.
The game I missed against Dallas, that helped out the Achilles tremendously, Landry said. I could have gotten trough that game but with me healing it even more, it made it even better.
But now its the groin.
I know it really tore him up emotionally, Shanahan said. He was hoping he could be able to go, but its just a little bit too sore.
Landry missed only one game in his first three seasons (56 of 57), but since midway through last year, injuries have kept him out 16 times in 24 games.
Im not sure hes gotten into the type of shape he would like to get in, Shanahan said. Hes worked hard to come back but hes had some nagging injuries that have kept him behind.
When he was placed on injured reserve in October, tight end Chris Cooley said the NFL lockout was a reason his knee was never right since he could not rehabilitate at the team facility. It could have also played a factor in Landrys problems.
Anytime we keep players from rehab, I think it hurts because were working with guys every day, theyre on a schedule and what Chris is talking about is if he would have been here every day, it would have helped him in his rehab, Shanahan said. And its tough with the lockout, theres no question about it. We werent able to be around these guys. Even though they were getting rehab, we think it might have been a little different with us.
DeJon Gomes or Reed Doughty will start for Landry and both are expected to be a part of the rotation.
The coaches know Ill be ready to go every week, Doughty said. I dont ever think, Im a back-up this week.
