For the second straight year, Ernie Grunfeld has hit a home run at the draft. Last year he drafted or acquired John Wall, Kevin Seraphin, Trevor Booker, Jordan Crawford, and Hamadi NDiaye. Thats four first round picks and a second rounder. This year he followed that up with two more first round picks and a high second rounder. Lets welcome Jan Vesley, Chris Singleton, and Shelvin Mack to the team. Here are some things you should know about this years rookie class.
Jan Vesely or the Dunking Ninja as hes sometimes called is a welcomed addition to the Wizards frontline. He brings a couple of years of professional European basketball experience. Vesely is not your typical European big man. He has honed the European midrange game and compliments it with an above the rim game. Not only can he play above the rim, he enjoys playing above the rim. I can just picture it now, Wall on the break, Vesely trailing and ..THE DUNKING NINJA STRIKES AGAIN.
Now we need a defensive presence to force the turnover that starts the fast break, introducing ACC Defensive Player of the Year Chris Singleton. Singleton was a two time All-ACC Defensive Team selection while at Florida State. Hes a gritty, hardworking player, with a non-stop motor. He was a projected lottery pick and somehow fell to the Wizards at the eighteenth pick. He already played with a chip on his shoulder and now he has more ammo. I cant wait to see Singleton and Booker on the court together.
Last but not least, is Shelvin Return of the Mack. For those of you who dont know Mack, he was the starting PG at a small school in the Horizon League. And all he did, was guide little old Butler to the NCAA Final Game, two years in a row. He is known to light it up from deep and he plays bigger than his listed 63."
