With Tomas Vokoun too sick to play in tonights game against the San Jose Sharks the Capitals have recalled goaltender Braden Holtby and he is expected to start over Michal Neuvirth.

Holtby led the Caps onto the ice for warmups and is expected to make his NHL season debut for the Capitals.

The Caps have also recalled enforcer Joel Rechlicz from the AHL Hershey Bears. It is unclear whether Rechlicz will replace Keith Aucoin in the lineup tonight.

Holtby, 22, owns an 18-11-1 record with a 2.55 GAA and a .909 save percentage in 32 games with Hershey this season. He is tied for fifth in the AHL in wins and has recorded two shutouts.

Last season, Holtby went 10-2-2 record with a 1.79 GAA and a .934 save percentage in 14 games with the Capitals. Holtby won his last five starts with Washington and recorded the only assist for a Caps goaltender last season.

He will wear No. 70 for Washington.

The two recalls put the Caps over the 23-man roster limit but according to the CBA teams are permitted two goaltender exemptions a season for a limit of 48 hours. With the Capitals having three days off between games, Holtby is likely to return to the Bears on Tuesday.

Rechlicz, 24, made his Capitals debut on Jan. 31 against the Lightning in Tampa Bay and played the following night against Florida. He has one goal, one assist and 198 penalty minutes in 29 games with Hershey this season and currently leads the AHL in penalty minutes.

Rechlicz will wear No. 54 for the Capitals.
