It's a new look for the Washington Mystics, as not only will they sport new colors this season, but the name of a major sponsor of the team, Inova Health System, will replace the nickname on the front of the jersey. The Mystics become the fifth team in the WNBA to remove the team name from the uniform and replace it with the sponsor's name.
"It's important to look good," said Mystics' guard Alana Beard, who was on hand at the unveiling at Inova Hospital in Loudoun County on Thursday. "I love the jerseys. I love the way they fit and I love the name across it."
In keeping with the new color scheme for all teams that are part of Monumental Sports, the Mystics' new colors are red, silver and blue, joining the NHL's Capitals and the NBA's Wizards who will change their colors to that scheme for next season.
"We have sustainability of the colors, Mystics President and Managing Partner Sheila Johnson said. "We are sending a strong message to the nation that we are females, we are athletes and we deserve all the corporate sponsorship we can get -- and I think we are turning a corner here and I think that's what is most important."
Mystics COO Greg Bibb added,"There can only be one name on the front of our jersey and we're excited that it's Inova Health System. They're an ideal partner. Their vision aligns with ours and their ideals align with ours. Most importantly we are both committed to serving the community in which we work, live and play. "
The Mystics, who begin the WNBA season on June 4, will have the Inova name and logo on the front of their home and away jerseys.
