Capitals left wing Joel Ward says it was a simple mistake. Turns out it will be a costly one as well.

Ward didnt set his alarm clock for Tuesday morning, overslept and arrived late for a team meeting at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.

As a result Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau will sit him out of Wednesday nights home game against the Winnipeg Jets.

Ive got to pay the consequences of not playing, Ward said. I understand. Its part of the team rules that were written. I just made a mistake of sleeping in.

Boudreau said he has fined players in the past for missing team meetings but has never benched a player unless it was chronic.

This year, apparently, players have been given a shorter leash.

Its an unfortunate thing, he overslept. Boudreau said. He missed it. He understands the rules. Hes a good team guy and he feels bad about it, but he knows the rules.

With Ward out of the lineup, Alex Semin is expected to return tonight after sitting out Monday nights 4-3 win over Phoenix as a healthy scratch.

Ward, considered one of the most diligent and likable players on the team, said he had no excuses for his mistake and will accept the consequences.

I basically slept in, he said. I didnt set my alarm clock by accident and overslept and came in late. I understand. It is what it is.
