The Washington Capitals will face the New York Rangers in the first round of the 2011 NHL Playoffs, a result of the Rangers' win over the New Jersey Devils and the Carolina Hurricanes' loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night.

The Capitals will be the number one seed in the Eastern Conference side of the bracket and the Rangers will be seeded 8th. Washington finished the season with 107 points and captured the Southeast Division title for the fourth consecutive year.

Last season the Capitals were the number one seed but fell in the first round to the 8th seeded Montreal Canadiens. Washington led the series three games to one but dropped three straight as the Habs pulled out the upset to advance.

The Rangers and Capitals met in the first round of the 2008-09 playoffs with Washington winning in seven games. New York and Washington have played four times in the 2010-11 regular season, the Rangers won three of the match-ups and outscored the Capitals 18-6 in total.
