Long-time colleagues and friends Mike Shanahan and Bill Belichick did some business days after the lockout this summer.Belichick took one of Shanahans major problems Albert Haynesworth off his hands with a trade that gave the Redskins a fifth-round pick in the 2013 draft.Big Al quickly wore out his welcome in Foxborough, starting no games and lasting only six games (and 13 tackles) before he was released. He was claimed by Tampa Bay and though he has 13 tackles in six games, the Buccaneers havent won any of those games.I asked Belichick on a conference call Wednesday how surprised or not surprised he was that Haynesworth didnt work out.Speaking for myself and the organization, I think everybody really tried to work hard to make that work, he said. I think Albert tried hard. I didnt really have any criticisms of him or what he tried to do. I just think in the end, it just didnt work out. It was best to move on.Haynesworths two-year stay with the Redskins was a debacle, marked by confrontations with coaches, motorists and waitresses.Shanahan said he didnt talk to Belichick until after the trade was completed.I would have probably done the same thing, Shanahan said of the trade. Heres a guy that you get a chance to get at a good price and at that type of ability bring him in, see if you can get him changed and youre hoping he fits in. You get him at the perfect price and you know if he doesnt play good for you, hes probably out of the league. I thought it was a smart move for them, it just didnt work out.
