Capitals Play-by-Play

All good things must come to an end and tonight the Caps lengthy home ice win streak would fall by the way side. If you watched the first two periods of this game you would have said that Dallas didn't have a prayer for victory. After Tom Poti and Alex Ovechkin gave the home team a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes, the only thing you could complain about was that it wasn't a 6-0 advantage.Marty Turco was incredible from the very first minute of play and it was only because of him that the Caps did not distance themselves from the Stars. As it turns out, the terribly one-sided game was ripe for a large momentum shift.Washington had not given Dallas a power play chance until the third period. Once that occurred the outcome would change dramatically. Two heavy duty screens paved the way for man advantage goals from Brad Richards and Trevor Daley and left Semyon Varlamov helpless.

The next goal was one Varlamov will be kicking himself about. James Neal's wrist shot squeaked through Varlamov's pads. I'm still not sure if it hit a defenders stick along the way, but either way we've seen Varly make that stop. He didn't this time and the home win streak was in jeopardy. But all was not lost. Ovechkin put on a devilish hesitation move to beat a defender, then smoked one over Turco's glove to give the Caps new life with three minutes left. Brimming with confidence, Ovechkin had the best chance in OT and Turco held him off for one of his astounding 49 saves. It was anyone's game in the shootout which witnessed two pretty put-aways by Nick Backstrom and Brad Richards. Both of those centers play with incredible vision and both saw fit to put backhanders into the net.The Stars had back-to-back chances to win in the shootout, with Varlamov saving the day. But Loui Eriksson ended the night in style for Dallas, a team that needs every point it
can muster in the Western Conference. We'll see you Wednesday back on CSN in HD when Carolina comes to town.
