Upon being told some of his first-team reps would be given to Rex Grossman, it didnt take long for John Beck to read the proverbial writing on the wall.
I knew there could be a situation, he said.
That situation was crystallized over the weekend when coach Mike Shanahan told Beck he was returning to back-up status, replaced by Rex Grossman, who played the distance in the Redskins loss to Miami.
Grossman is expected to start again this week against Dallas.
Beck was 0-3 as the Redskins starter, throwing two touchdowns, four interceptions and compiling a 72.1 passer rating.
Were in a position where we need things to be happening, Beck said Wednesday morning. Its a tough spot when you know youre still learning, but, hey, the time is now.
You want to be the guy playing but I dont hold the final say. Ultimately, I want to see our team win because were all working our tails off and were all trying to find the answers and Im a part of that puzzle.
Part of the puzzle, yes, but not as big a piece as when he was the starter. Beck took over the position for the final quarter of the Philadelphia game and earned a shot after completing 8 of 15 passes for 117 yards against the Eagles.
As the starter, he posted passer ratings of 80.8, 53.6 and 76.0.
I definitely could see areas where I progressed and areas where I still needed improvement, Beck said. Game to game, there were different things. Some of the things I would learn from the previous game, we would improve on and then the next game, we would say, OK, we need to improve on this.
Once again the back-up, Beck will prepare the same.
I do truly believe in the phrase, Tough times dont last, tough people do, he said. Im grateful for the opportunity I did get to play in games and be in front of live bullets.
White Makes Debut
Although he was limited to a single play on special teams, Markus White made his NFL debut against Miami.
It was a relief, he said. I had wanted to play but at the same time, I know my role. Its easy to get frustrated in this situation but I have to look at it from the standpoint of, its a business and theyre teaching me how to play a position.
To date, the role is transitioning from Florida State defensive end to Redskins outside linebacker.
I wouldnt say its physically tougher, but the cover skills, its something I had to pick up on that I was never used to doing, White said. Im healthy and learning at the same time so when I do get on the field, I should be at my best.
Shanahan On Moore Release
The Redskins released safety Kareem Moore on Tuesday instead of placing him on injured reserve or moving him to the 53-man roster. Shanahan said Moore was close to 100 percent healthy.
Because of league rules, the Redskins are prohibited from re-signing Moore this year, but he can be claimed on waivers or signed by another team.
Hopefully he gets healed up and hes able to go full speed, Shanahan said.
Moores release re-affirms the Redskins confidence in rookie safety DeJon Gomes.
Tackle Sean Locklear and left guard Maurice Hurt were unable to practice Wednesday and right tackle Jammal Brown was limited, raising the possibility of yet another offensive line combination. So far, the lineup has been:
Games 1-5: LT Trent Williams-LG Kory Lichtensteiger-C Will Montgomery-RG Chris Chester-RT Jammal Brown.
Games 6-7: LT Locklear-LG Montgomery-C Erik Cook-RG Chester-RT Brown.
Game 8: LT Williams-LG Hurt-C Montgomery-RG Chester-RT Brown.
Game 9: LT Williams-LG Hurt-C Montgomery-RG Chester-RT Locklear.
Four combinations in nine games isnt an ideal reciepe for success.
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan wouldnt reveal what the Redskins have in mind if Brown, Locklear or Hurt cant play, Tyler Polumbus would most likely play right tackle if Brown and Locklear cant go and Montgomery would shift to left guard (Cook would play center).
