The Redskins again face a great running back in San Franciscos Frank Gore, who has rushed for 675 yards and five touchdowns in seven games. The 49ers rank sixth in rushing and the Redskins are vulnerable against the run after being gashed during a three-game losing streak.

This is a great challenge, Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett said. You have to step up and do a great job and not just part of the time but for 60 minutes because if somebody runs the ball 35 times, theyre going to get 100 yards. We have to do it this week for 60 minutes.

Eliminating the long rush is crucial for the Redskins.

Left tackle Trent Williams has missed the last two games with an ankle sprain and is listed as questionable. If he plays, its possible rookie Maurice Hurt could start at left guard and Will Montgomery moves back to center.

The Redskins allowed a franchise-record 10 sacks last week against Buffalo. Williams at less than full strength would help that cause.

Four 49ers have at least three sacks.

The Redskins want to get their running game going but that only happens if they get a lead. They need to score early (like in Week 3 at St. Louis) so theyre not chasing the game and become one-dimensional.

Its always tough when you cant run the ball, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said. It makes it tougher on the quarterback, it makes it tougher on the O-line. Even when you arent running the ball well, its still something you want to stick with to take the pressure off the quarterback, the O-line and the whole passing game.

The Redskins rush attempts in their three wins: 26, 35 and 41.

The Redskins rush attempts in their four losses: 22, 14, 23 and 11.

San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis is the latest test for the Redskins pass defense. He leads the 49ers in catches (27) and receiving yards (298) and is tied for touchdown catches (three).

On various downs, it could fall on rookie linebacker Ryan Kerrigan to account for Davis.

Asked about Kerrigans coverage skills, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said: Hes made a lot of progress. Normally a guy just coming in the league, going from defensive end to outside linebacker, they usually have no idea about coverage skills or what type of routes a tight end is going with. Hes done a fantastic job of fitting in the system, adjusting very quickly, playing both base and nickel and you dont do that unless youre a special player.

PICK: 49ers 20-7.
