Virginia Tech freshman guard Malik Mueller must sit out the 2013-14 season due to issues with initial eligibility requirements, the NCAA announced.

Mueller, a native of Ehingen, Germany, was part of the Hokies deep freshman class coach James Johnson hoped would help offset the sizable loss of the nation's leading scorer Erick Green to graduation. The 6-foot-3 guard previously was named MVP of the Jordan Brand Classic.

“I am extremely disappointed for Malik, “ Johnson said in a statement released by the school. “This young man has worked very hard this summer both in workouts and in the classroom. I know that Malik will use this year to improve as a better basketball player and will continue his strong work in his academics. He will help this team in practice and from the sidelines.”

Mueller will be able to practice with the Hokies this season and will have four years of eligibility available when he is permitted to begin competing in games in the Fall of 2014.
