Virginia Tech forward C.J. Barksdale has been suspended for the first three games of the 2013-14 season due to a violation of team rules, head basketball coach James Johnson announced on Monday. The Hokies open the regular season on November 9 against USC Upstate followed by additional home games versus West Virginia and Western Carolina.

Barksdale, the Hokies third-leading returning scorer, averaged 5.6 points and 4.7 rebounds last season. The 6-foot-8 junior forward will continue to practice with the team and would return for Virginia Tech's matchup versus VMI game on Monday, Nov. 18 in Cassell Coliseum.

“I am disappointed in C.J., “ Johnson said in a statement released by the program that did not provide detailed information about the violation. “He is a young man who made a bad decision and now must deal with the consequences. I know that he will come back from this suspension and continue be a valuable member of this program.”

Virginia Tech enters the season with a major hole following the graduation of guard Erick Green, the nation's leading scorer last season. The frontcourt combination of Jarell Eddie, Cadarian Raines and Barksdale projects as the Hokies strength for the upcoming campaign.
