Yankees watching their money?

Maybe the Orioles’ ascension into contenders has disturbed something in the universe. We seem to be living in a topsy-turvy world.

Did you ever think you would hear that the Yankees lost a player because they didn’t have enough money to pay him? And that the team they lost the player to would be the Pirates?

That’s apparently the case with catcher Russell Martin. The free agent is headed to Pittsburgh after agreeing to a two-year, $17 million deal, according to media reports.

David Waldstein of The New York Times reported, via Twitter: “Martin said he loved playing in New York but it was a business decision. Said the Yankees told him they didn't have the cash to match.”

And the Yankees also reportedly aren’t in on the bidding for the remaining biggest names on the free-agent market among catchers, Mike Napoli and A.J. Pierzynski.

The Yankees not among the contenders for free agents? Not enough money to retain someone? What a strange world we’ve entered.
