The talk from the baseball cognoscenti — Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal and ESPN’s Buster Olney — is that the Orioles are in pursuit of free-agent outfielder Jonny Gomes.

Gomes spent last season with the A’s, hitting 18 homers and batting .262 with a .377 on-base percentage. Hardball Talk ranked Gomes as the No. 67 available free agent this off-season. The Hardballers like him as an acquisition, but not for a team that wants to play him full-time:

“He’s definitely at his most useful when he’s starting primarily against left-handers, so the team that signs him as a regular would be making a mistake. However, as a part-time player, he’s probably worth $2.5 million-$3 million anyway.”

Gomes hit .299/.413 in 164 at-bats against left-handers for Oakland, as opposed to .209/.324 against right-handers.

Would the Orioles want to bring in Gomes as a part-timer? Maybe he becomes part of a left-field platoon and occasional designated hitter.
