Orioles left-handed pitcher Brian Matusz had surgery last month to repair a torn muscle in his abdomen.
Matusz, who was converted into a left-handed relief specialist had pitched for the last three months of the season with the injury, according to a report by MLB.com.
After his August recall, Matusz allowed just two runs and five hits in 13 1/3 innings as a reliever. He was the losing pitcher in Game 4 of the American League Division Series.
In 2012, Matusz was 6-10 with a 4.87 ERA.
The Orioles say that would like Matusz to have another shot at starting next season, but it seems more likely he’ll remain in the bullpen given his success.
-The Orioles re-signed six players to minor league contracts according to Baseball America. They are right-handed pitcher Eric Beaulac and catchers Zach Booker, Joel Polanco, Chris Robinson and Scott Thomas.
-The Toronto Blue Jays contacted former Orioles manager Mike Hargrove about their vacant managerial position, according to a report by Foxsports.com.
Hargrove, who managed the Orioles from 2000-03, hasn’t managed since leaving the Seattle Mariners during the 2007 season.
