Terps' Vellano named to Nagurski, Outland watch lists

This Thursday, Maryland Terrapinssenior defensive lineman Joe Vellano was named to the watch lists for theBronco Nagurski Trophy and the Outland Trophy.

The Nagurski Trophy is given annually to the nations best defensive player. Chosen by the Football WritersAssociation of America (FWAA) and the Charlotte Touchdown Club, five finalists willbe selected on Nov. 15, and the winner will be presented the Nagurski Trophy onDec. 3 in Charlotte, N.C.The Outland Trophy is given to the bestinterior lineman in college football; its watch list includes 71 players, thoughjust 18 are defensive tackles. The winner is chosen from three finalists whoare part of the FWAA All-America Team. After those three finalists are named onNov. 19, the Outland Trophy will be awarded on The Home Depot College FootballAwards show Dec. 6 on ESPN.

Vellano, a preseason All-American, was also named to the Bednarik Award watchlist Monday. Vellano is one of 10 starters returning to a defense that entersits first year under defensive coordinator Brian Stewart and his 3-4 scheme.
