It didn’t start pretty, but Maryland played impressive basketball in its first National Invitational Tournament game. The game ended with the Terps beating Niagara 86-70 mainly on the strength of a dominant second half.

Moving forward in the NIT the Terps will face the University of Denver on Thursday night. This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools, and the Terps fifth game in eight days.

At halftime against Niagara, the game was tied at 35. Defense led the Terps to the impressive win, including a full-court press that generated Niagara turnovers and fast break points for the Terps.

Logan Aronhalt and Seth Allen each scored 15 points for the Terps, while Nick Faust scored 15 in addition to grabbing 11 rebounds.

Faust and fellow sophomore Dez Wells have been playing at a high-level for the Terps over the last few games. In the last four games Maryland has averaged 80 points per game, with Wells going for 18 a game and Faust for more than 13.

If the Terps can keep up the defensive pressure and maintain the scoring pace, they should continue to advance in the NIT.
