There are all kinds of right reasons for local college basketball fans to check out the Basketball Alumni Legends League. There is now a lefty reason as well.
Lefty Driesell will coach a Maryland-based team loaded with former Terps on Saturday night at 7 p.m. inside George Washington's Smith Center against a D.C. squad headlined by former Georgetown players.
The legendary Maryland coach last roamed the sidelines during the 2002-03 season for Georgia State. Don't consider this a coming-out-of-retirement situation, but rather a blast-from-the past moment. Actually, that's the entire basis for The-BALL summer series, which includes alumni teams representing Virginia, North Carolina and Philadelphia.
Former Terps James Gist, John Gilchrist, Landon Milbourne and Sean Mosley are expected to suit up for the Maryland team, along with former players from Loyola and UMBC.
Austin Freeman and Chris Wright, former backcourt starters for the Hoyas, are listed as members of the D.C. team, which will play three additional games at the Smith Center through August 5. Others on the roster include ex-Georgetown center Henry Sims, former George Washington notables Tony Taylor and Pops Mansah-Bonsu, George Mason's Jai Lewis and American University's Vlad Moldoveanu.
