Scoreboard catches fire in Columbus

The D.C. United-Columbus Crew game was delayed about 50 minutes due to a fire in one of the stadium’s scoreboards. According to a Tweet sent out by the Columbus Crew’s account, the fire started around 7:17 p.m.


The scoreboard stands above the stadium, luckily well away from spectators. The Columbus Fire Department arrived soon after.


The fire was eventually contained about an hour after it had broken out.


Players eventually returned to the field to resume warm ups and the game was played without further interruption.


According to a statement released by Columbus, the fire took place in the speaker cabinet of the scoreboard. There were no reported injuries.


The exact cause of the fire is not yet known.
