Washington D.C. (May 16, 2013) – D.C. United today announced that Homegrown goalkeeper Bill Hamid has been called up to the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT). Hamid will report to training camp on May 30 ahead of the team’s friendly against Germany on Sunday, June 2 at RFK Stadium (2:30 p.m. ET). The game is featured as the Centennial Celebration Match as part of U.S. Soccer’s 100-year anniversary celebration.
Hamid earned his first cap with the senior USMNT when he registered a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Venezuela in Glendale, Ariz. on Jan. 21, 2012. Most recently, Hamid was called up for training camp and a friendly against Canada at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, TX on Jan. 29. The 22-year-old netminder was also called up several times in 2011, serving as Tim Howard’s backup in games against Mexico (Aug. 10), Costa Rica (Sept. 2), Belgium (Sept. 6), Honduras (Oct. 8), France (Nov. 11) and Slovenia (Nov. 15). Hamid made the 18-man roster for each match; however, the young goalkeeper did not see time on the pitch. The D.C. United Academy product also made appearances for the U-23 USMNT in March 2012, alongside United teammate Perry Kitchen, in three qualifying matches for the 2012 London Olympics.
Now, in his fourth season at D.C. United, Hamid started his 2013 campaign well, earning himself MLS Save of the Week (Week 1) – one of several nominations throughout the season thus far – and winning MLS Player of the Week (Week 3) after a stellar performance against the New York Red Bulls on 3/16. Last season, Hamid started 24 games and registered career-bests in GAA (1.03), saves (88), shutouts (8) and wins (13). By the end of the 2012 campaign, the young goalkeeper finished with the best saves percentage (77.9%) and boasted the third-lowest GAA (minimum of 1,000 minutes played) in MLS.
