The Wizards have promoted Pat Sullivan from advance scout to assistant coach, CSNwashington confirmed with a source close to the team.

An opening on Randy Wittman's staff existed after Jerry Sichting left for an assistant's job with Phoenix last month.

Sullivan joined the Wizards for the 2012-13 season after previous stints as an assistant with the Detroit Pistons and the New Jersey Nets. Most basketball fans may recognize him from his four-year run playing for North Carolina, where he reached three Final Fours (1991, 1993 and 1995). The Bogota, N.J. later served as an assistant at UNC and North Carolina-Wilmington before working under Larry Brown with the Pistons as an assistant coach/video coordinator starting with Detroit's 2004 championship season.

Sullivan joins fellow assistants Don Newman, Don Zierden, Sam Cassell and Ryan Saunders. Last season Newman, Zierden and Cassell sat on the bench during games while Sichting and Saunders sat off court.

The Washington Post first reported Sullivan's promotion.
