Ernie Grunfeld 'open to anything' at #3

The Washington Wizards didn't get the No. 1 overall pick in Tuesday’s draft lottery, but they improved five spots to move up to No. 3 overall.

The Orlando Magic had the best odds of getting the top pick with a 25 percent chance but settled for second. The Cleveland Cavaliers (15.6 percent chance) will select No. 1.

The Wizards had just a 3.5 percent chance.

“We have recently been able to use the draft to form a potent backcourt in John Wall and Bradley Beal that we envision leading us for years to come,” Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld said. “We are thrilled to be able to add in another young talent with the third pick in this year’s draft and are very optimistic about what our team can accomplish moving forward.”

The results mean the Wizards must re-focus their draft prospects after spending last week at the combine in Chicago interviewing the likes of Steven Adams, Cody Zeller and Alex Len.

The Wizards didn't have 30-minute sitdown interviews with Nerlens Noel or Ben McLemore, who are projected to go within the top three picks on June 27, in Chicago. The Wizards did interview Georgetown's Otto Porter, who has seen his draft stock rise quickly.

The rest of the order: Charlotte Bobcats, Phoenix Suns, New Orleans Pelicans, Sacramento Kings, Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves, Portland Trail Blazers, Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors, Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz.

Beal was the Wizards' representative at the lottery in New York.

“This is another important step for our franchise and for our fans,” he said.  “I’m honored that I could represent both onstage tonight when we got the pick and I’m excited to see our team continue to move in such a positive direction.”

The Wizards finished 29-53, losing the last six games of the season with Beal, Nene, Emeka Okafor and Martell Webster on the bench with injuries.

Beal later wrote on his Twitter account: "Time to stay out the lottery now !"
