Wizards building team with solid role players

This free agency period is certainly a trendy one for the Wizards.

On day two of the financial frenzy, the Wizards aggressively moved to re-signing Martell Webster. Shortly after the news broke, the quirky small forward with an outsized personality used video to let everyone know, "I'm baaaaaaaaaack."

The next day, as in this day, the Wizards once again re-upped one of their own, agreeing to a one-year deal with guard Garrett Temple. Like Webster, Temple tuned the video camera on (at least the one that is part of his phone) to tell D.C. he's returning. Unlike Webster, he went with a more toned down (volume-wise) version. "Whiz kids, let's go baby! Playoff bound," Temple exclaimed.

Sidebar: If you want proof of a culture shift within the Wizards organization, look no further than bringing back Temple. In the past the franchise would have let a smart player like Temple walk since he doesn't pop upside, instead going for a potential home run signing with an underachieving sort who maybe turns into something. While the temptation is understandable, teams can't swing for the fences with all 15 roster spots. Temple is solid complementary piece who knows his role, plays defense, practices hard and listens to his coach. On a more specific level, he provides Wittman with another versatile player, one that can serve as the third point guard behind John Wall and Eric Maynor and enter into the  backup wing guard rotation behind Bradley Beal.
