After spending the past season as a member of the chattering class, Flip Saunders is back in the NBA game. The former Wizards head coach will reportedly become the general manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves after the franchise fired David Kahn on Thursday.

Following a 2-15 start to the truncated 2011-12 season, the Wizards dismissed Saunders, who still had one season remaining on a four-year, $18 million contract. That season, spent as a television basketball analyst, is now up. Saunders would take over a team that finished 31-51 this past season and a Minnesota franchise that hasn't reached the playoffs since 2004. Minnesota does have a solid nucleus in play with Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio plus an established coach in Rick Adelman, so there's that.

Saunders played collegiality at the University of Minnesota and has previously been linked to a group attempting to buy the Timerbwolves from current owner Glen Taylor.
