Pregame warmup: Rice shoots but still not officially cleared

Glen Rice worked up a sweat before Friday's game vs. the Toronto Raptors at Verizon Center, but he's still not ready to get back on the court after having outpatient surgery on his right shooting wrist last month.

Coach Randy Wittman said the stitches are out and that Rice only can do dummy drills. No contact. No shooting.

However, I posted this picture on my Twitter account three days ago from the practice court in which Rice was in fact shooting.

So why the contradiction? Rice had surgery Dec. 18 and the team announced that he'd miss 3-6 weeks.

Wittman is quick to make it clear, he's not always up to date on where players are health-wise and leaves that up to the athletic trainers and physicians. As the coach, he can't be worried about all of that minutiae and it's not his job. He only needs to know when a player can play.

The clarification I received after Wittman's update was that even though I did see Rice shooting, he's not doing shooting drills or taking part in any serious activities. The shots that he took were close to the rim, on his own time after practice to test it and were OK as long as he didn't overdo it.
