Porter continuing to develop in Summer League play

LAS VEGAS -– The Wizards scrimmaged for two quarters vs. the Toronto Raptors on Monday, but there was one notable omission: Otto Porter.

The Wizards’ top draft pick, third overall, was held out because of tightness in his right hamstring, CSN Washington learned when asking of Porter’s whereabouts. Free agent Sundiata Gaines also didn't participate because of a calf injury.

Porter’s injury isn't considered significant and is expected to play their third summer league game, Tuesday vs. the Denver Nuggets (NBATV, 10 p.m. ET).

Porter, a 6-8 small forward, hasn't played particularly well in terms of scoring, though he has made plays on defense and in transition. He has started both games at shooting guard with Bradley Beal unable to compete.

“I might play him at the point or something. We want to see what he can do. We want to see what brings to our ballclub,” said assistant coach Sam Cassell, who’ll call the shots for the second time in three games from the bench. “I might play him at the power forward a little bit. We got to see what he can do, what he can’t do.”

Cassell doesn't believe there’s a such thing as experimenting with Porter too much. He doesn't expect his confidence to suffer because of his 27% shooting (7-for-26), either.

“He’s fine. The one thing (is), he can get his shots up,” Cassell said. “(If) a player can get his shots off, he’ll make some.”

In other injury news, Bradley Beal, who is here watching the team compete in summer league, still hasn't been cleared by the Wizards to return to action after a stress injury to his lower right leg ended his rookie season in April.

Beal took shots wearing flip flops after Monday's scrimmage. He told CSN he’s still not sure if he’ll compete at USA Basketball’s mini-camp next week which also is in Las Vegas.

He still plans to attend and may do drills.
