For many Wizards fans, the era that included players like Andray Blatche, Nick Young and JaVale McGee on the same team seemed like a bad reality show. Now it appears Hollywood agrees.
Reports from the Hollywood Reporter show that McGee, now playing for the Denver Nuggets, will star in a reality show called Millionaire Mama's Boy. JaVale's mother Pamela McGee, herself a former basketball player, will co-star in the show. The show will air on OWN, Oprah Winfrey's television network.
Pamela McGee made news in D.C. when JaVale played for the Wizards by defending her son's actions on and off the court. While a freakish athlete, JaVale routinely made head-scratching plays on the Wizards, enough that he was eventually traded away.
The term "knucklehead" became synonymous with those Wizards teams, to the point where Pamela McGee spoke with Washington Post columnist Mike Wise to defend her son and tell the world JaVale "is not a knucklehead."
In reply, Charles Barkley was quoted at the time saying, "I’m so disappointed in JaVale McGee. He has not gotten better as a player. Now, he’s just doing stupid stuff. When your mom has to tell people you’re not a knucklehead, you probably are a knucklehead."
Though the drama that followed McGee's time in D.C. happened well over a year ago, some of the same stigma has followed him to Denver. In January, Nuggets coach George Karl said of McGee, "He’s got to understand that lazy and crazy isn’t going to make it work."
Like many mothers, Pamela McGee is very defensive of her son. Should make for great television.
