AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Marcin Gortat began his career with the Wizards on the bench, even though coach Randy Wittman said before the season-opener vs. the Detroit Pistons that he liked what he has seen so far.
Probably to Nene's chagrin, he made the start at center while Trevor Booker, who ended the preseason as the starting power forward, remained there.
Eventually, Gortat, who was acquired in a trade with the Phoenix Suns last week, will work his way into the starting lineup which will allow Nene to play at power forward.
Nene began with a trio of mid-range jump shots and was matched up with Andre Drummond. He drew the Pistons' center away from the basket to find space but had trouble keeping him off the glass.
Gortat entered the game with 2:51 left in the first quarter and played with Nene. He failed to score in seven minutes of his first action, had three rebounds and two turnovers.
The Wizards, however, were minus-7 with him in the game at that point.
