Doc Rivers shed a tear or two during the standing ovation and video tribute he received on the court Wednesday in the former Celtics coach's return to Boston as coach of the Los Angeles Clippers.
After the game, won by the Clippers 96-88, the emotion continued to flow in the postgame press conference. When asked about his reception and the tribute, Rivers choked up and took a few seconds to compose himself before saying:
"It was just a really nice day. This is, it's just such a classy place here. It's an amazing fan base. It really is. I was basically useless for the first 18 minutes [of the game]. It doesn't surprise me. You've gotta live here to understand that. That's just the way they are."
