- NEW YORK - The AP surveys voters ahead of the Hall of Fame vote Jan. 9. This marks the first time Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa - players linked to the steroid era - are on the ballot.

- When San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich sent his stars home from a road trip with a game to go in Miami, Commissioner David Stern promised penalties. But were the Spurs violating NBA rules?

- WASHINGTON - Gregg Williams, the former defensive coordinator of the Saints, is cross-examined by lawyers for players appealing their suspensions stemming from the bounty investigation.

- FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. - The Falcons' offense played too inconsistently for coach Mike Smith's liking against New Orleans on Thursday night. The good part? Atlanta is 11-1, the best record in the league.

- ATLANTA - Not so fast cementing that Notre Dame-Alabama matchup. If No. 3 Georgia beats No. 2 Alabama in the SEC final Saturday, the Bulldogs will face the No. 1 Fighting Irish for the national title.

- STANFORD, Calif. - Six days after Stanford's 35-17 rout at UCLA, the No. 8 Cardinal host the No. 17 Bruins in a Pac-12 championship game rematch. The winner earns a Rose Bowl berth. Game starts 8 p.m.

- DETROIT - Kent State takes on Northern Illinois for the MAC championship, with a possible berth in a BCS bowl at stake. Game starts 7 p.m.

- THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Nick Watney leads Keegan Bradley, Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell by two shots entering the second round of the World Challenge. Tournament host Tiger Woods is three back.

- NEW YORK - David Wright, a homegrown fan favorite and the face of the franchise, agrees to a $138 million, eight-year contract with the Mets, the AP is told. The deal is the richest in club history.

- BEAVER CREEK, Colo. - Aksel Lund Svindal is favored in a World Cup downhill on a challenging Birds of Prey course. Reigning champion Bode Miller won't compete because he is recovering from knee surgery.

- CARSON, Calif. - David Beckham's impending farewell looms over the defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy's rematch with the Houston Dynamo in Saturday's MLS Cup.

- GENEVA - A three-member panel will investigate possible links between the Lance Armstrong doping case and cycling's governing body. The panel will meet in London from April 9-26 and report by June 1.

- Miguel Cotto always found a second home inside the Madison Square Garden ring. He'll need every advantage he can get when he fights undefeated welterweight champion Austin Trout on Saturday night.
