NEW YORK (AP) Comments on the San Francisco 49ers by the AP Pro32 panel (ranking in parentheses):
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (4)
Chris Berman (ESPN, 2) - Not sure what that tie was.
Clifton Brown (Sporting News, 2) - If they have to play longer without Alex Smith, they will miss him.
Cris Collinsworth (NBC Sports, 5)
Rich Gannon (CBS Sports/SiriusXM NFL Radio, 5) - A tie is better than a loss, I suppose.
Bob Glauber (Newsday, 5) - Terrific comeback by backup Colin Kaepernick as Niners tie it with 17 fourth-quarter points. But kicker David Akers can't seal the deal in OT, and Niners settle for the tie. Could prove huge if Seahawks stay in the NFC West race to the end.
Rick Gosselin (Dallas Morning News, 4) - The 49ers have allowed the fewest points in the NFL (127) and the fewest yards in the NFC.
Clark Judge (CBSSports.com, 7) - Memo to Jim Harbaugh: Get that fan from the Visa commercial out of the locker room. Your team hasn't been the same since he started giving pregame pep talks.
Ira Kaufman (Tampa Tribune, 4) - Two stellar defenses match up Monday night when the Bears visit Candlestick Park.
Pat Kirwan (SiriusXM NFL Radio/CBSSports.com, 8) - They should have lost the game to the Rams which they eventually tied and it showed the team has work to do. Hope Alex Smith is OK because he makes them better. He was 7 for 8 when he left the Ram game with a concussion.
John Lynch (Fox Sports, 6) - A tie? Yes a tie. Alex Smith a little more valuable than the critics think?
Alex Marvez (Foxsports.com, 4) - Failing to win as a double-digit favorite usually would be considered a major disappointment, but there were mitigating circumstances. Backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick was forced into the most extensive action of his two-year NFL career in place of the injured Alex Smith (concussion) and didn't do half-bad in a 24-24 tie with St. Louis.
Dan Pompei (Chicago Tribune, 5) - They have allowed an NFL-low 127 points, but if they had allowed one fewer they would be 7-2 instead of 6-2-1.
